What command does AETC fall under? ›

The Air Education and Training Command (AETC) is one of the nine Major Commands (MAJCOM) of the United States Air Force (USAF), reporting to Headquarters, United States Air Force.

Air Education and Training Command, with headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, was established and activated in January 1942, making it the oldest major command in the Air Force. Our mission is to recruit, train and educate Airmen to deliver 21st Century Airpower.

AETC operates 1,396 trainer, fighter and mobility aircraft, 23 wings, 12 bases, and five geographically separated groups.

The Air Force also will overhaul how airmen are trained and educated. That's where the Air Education and Training Command at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph comes in. First up, a name change: AETC will become the Airmen Development Command.

The pilot in command must hold the rank of captain, and typically sits in the left seat.

Cadets at the United States Air Force Academy accomplish flying training under the responsibility of AETC as well. These programs include soaring, powered flight and free-fall parachuting. The foundational step in military aviation is our undergraduate flying training programs.

AETC includes Air Force Recruiting Service, two numbered air forces and the Air University. The command operates 12 major installations and supports tenant units on numerous bases across the globe. There are also 16 active-duty and seven Reserve wings.

AETC includes more than 60,000 active duty, Air National Guard and reserve members, civilians and contractors who deliver training programs tailored to meet the strategic needs of today's Air Force.

The Guard has a unique dual mission, with both federal and state responsibilities. During peacetime, Guard forces are commanded by the governor through a state adjutant general. The governor can call the Guard into action during local or state-wide emergencies, such as storms, drought and civil disturbances.
